Lawn Fawn Challenge #2…………Interactive Elements!

Don’t you just love to get a card that you can play with?   That’s the theme of the second Lawn Fawn Challenge.  We were challenged to make something that moved or did something in some way.  These are some of my favorite cards to make and give as they are so much fun.  I know that I always get a great response when I make a card for someone that they can pick up and actually play with.  I can remember the first time I gave my daughter one and her eyes lit up….and she’s in her 30s!  Hey, we’re all kids at heart!  Whether it is a shaker card, a slider card, pop-up card or even one that lights up, interactive cards are always a big hit.

I decided that I wanted to do a slider card for this challenge.  Since this Sunday is Easter, I decided to go with that theme and bunnies and chicks are the fun animals of the day.  What could be cuter than a couple of chicks painting Easter eggs.  But since these chicks wanted to add a bit of fun, they decided to roll the egg back and forth to each other to paint it!

Now before you get too dizzy, let me tell you how I made this.  I first cut a 4.25″ x 5.5″ mottled blue cardstock for the sky.  Using the least curved of the Simple Grassy Hillsides die I tilted it and cut a taller hill of grass from green Bazzill cardstock.  This is the layer that will get cut for the slider mechanism.  I then cut a shorter layer from the same green cardstock using the Grassy Border die.  On the tips of the grass I used a Tsukineko Eucalyptus distress stain to darken them.  I cut 2 sizes of the Simple Puffy Clouds out of pearlized swirl cardstock to use in the sky.

The stars of the card come from an adorable stamp and die set called Chirpy-Chirp-Chirp.  I only used a few of the many stamps in this set.  It’s not only good for Easter, but lots of other themes as “Chirpy-Chirp-Chirp” can be translated to mean……….well almost anything!  I stamped two different chicks, one open egg (there is also a decorative stamp for inside), two of the paint brushes and two of the paint cans.  I colored them all with Copic markers and then die cut them all out.  I colored the egg all “splotchy”, because that’s how it would turn out when you are rolling it back and forth to paint it, and trimmed off the white edge with my curved scissors (see previous post) to clean it up a bit.

First the background and slider mechanisms need to be put together.  I laid out the 2 grass pieces and decided where I wanted my egg to roll.  I knew that I wanted it roll behind the shorter layer but still be seen, so I measured it so that it would just be behind the tufts of grass of the shorter piece.  I then cut the longer straight slider in the Slide On Over die set from the larger grassy piece and made sure to keep the fall away piece.  NOTE: Use the fall away piece to place onto the background to keep the grass color behind the slider area.  Use temporary adhesive to attach the large grass piece in place and glue the fall away piece to the proper area then remove the main grassy piece.  Do this BEFORE you put on the foam tape.  I did it the hard way….don’t even ask!  Now place a double layer of foam tape around the edges of the larger grassy piece making sure that the penny used for the back clears them all when it is sliding.  Depending on where your slider is, you may not be able to put it the whole way around the edge, but that’s OK.  I also put a single layer of foam tape on the edges of front grassy piece and on the back of each chick.  Put a 1/4″ ROUND pop dot in the center of the penny.  You must use a round one to get your egg to roll.  I also suggest that you run an anti-stick pad or applicator all around the edges of your foam tape and pop dot before assembly.

Now for the fun part…..putting it all together!  Slip the pop dot on your penny through the slider mechanism from the back and attach the whole larger grassy area to the front of your card.  On the smaller grass piece gently pull the grass blades forward so they will not interfere with the egg movement. Attach the smaller grass piece to the bottom of the card.  Move the penny towards the center and attach the egg at the center point to the pop dot making sure it is behind the lower grassy area.  Place your chicks, brushes and paint pails where you want them.  Glue your clouds in the sky.  Stamp the “Chirpy-Chirp-Chirp” from the set onto a strip of white cardstock, cut fishtails on each end, ink the edges with an aqua Copic marker and attach to the bottom of the card.  Attach the whole front onto an A2 sized card and you’re done!  Now watch their eyes light up as they tilt the card back and forth to roll the egg between each of the chicks.

One other note…………I decided I really didn’t like the white edges of the foam tape showing but wasn’t sure what to do about it.  So I experimented with using a Copic marker shade near the green color and coloring the edges of the foam and it worked!  It wasn’t perfect, but it sure was better than seeing all the extra white foam edges.
