Unicorn Birthday Magic!!

I had to wait to post this card as it was for my daughter’s birthday a week ago, but now it can be revealed.  I rarely, if ever, post cards where I have gotten ideas from other blogs, but I just couldn’t resist this adorable unicorn card done by Frances Byrne of Stamp Owl Studios.  So here is my version of her unicorn birthday card.

I decided that my card had to be purple because that is one of my daughter’s favorite colors.  My card uses dies by Karen Burniston (KB Riley LLC), Sue Wilson (Creative Expressions) and Spellbinders.  The printed sentiments on the banners are of my own design.

Since Karen B’s dies allow you to choose your own card size, I chose a card size that would be 5″x5″.  I cut a piece of 100# cardstock to 5″ x 10″, scored it in half and folded.  I then took some pieces of purple floral patterned paper and cut 3 pieces, 2 being 4-7/8″ square and one being 4-3/4″ square.  I also cut a piece of black textured cardstock to 4-7/8″ square.  I attached the 2 larger pieces to the inside of the card and the smaller piece to the black piece and then attached those to the front of the card.  That made the base of the card.  NOTE:  Due to the number of layers on this card, I used lightweight patterned paper.  I felt that using patterned cardstock would make it too bulky.

Next I decided on how big I wanted my unicorn to be and where I wanted the face located on the front of the card.  Since I was doing the banner sentiments I located the circle a bit below center to give me enough room for the banner and die cut the circle out of the front of the card completely through all 4 layers.  I also chose a slightly bigger circle die and used both to cut two frames out of Bazzill purple Bling cardstock, and using the larger of the two circle dies I cut a piece of acetate for my window.  Put these aside for later use.

Now for the inside.  Following the Karen Burniston video for the Katherine Pop Up die  (found on the same page with this link) I cut the mechanism out of the Bazzill purple Bling cardstock, assembled the mechanism (do not attach yet to the inside) and held it against the fold of the card and temporarily held it in place with some Post It Note tape.  I folded it in place to where it would be when the card is closed and then adjusted it so that the area where the mechanism would attach to the unicorn was as centered in the hole as I could make it.  Once I found this “sweet spot”, so to say, I attached the mechanism inside the card as shown in the video.

Next, using the smaller of the circle dies from above, I cut a circle out of white 100# cardstock.  Then using Pink Fresh Magical Unicorn stamps and dies I stamped in the eyelashes and rouged the cheeks with some pink Tsukineko Memento ink.  Wait to add any other embellishments to the unicorn.  Now, close the card and remove the adhesive backing from the mechanism (or put some liquid glue on it) and place the unicorn face through the hole and onto the mechanism making sure it is straight.  Carefully open the card making sure the unicorn face pops back inside the card.  When you fully open the card the unicorn should rise up and out away from the card.  Close it again and the face should peek through the hole in the front.  The rest of the card is just decorating it as you want!

Find the 2 purple frames and the acetate piece.  I attached the acetate to the back of one of the frames using Ranger Multi Medium Matte.  Then I attached the entire piece to the front of the card making sure the openings lined up.  Attach the second frame to the inside of the card around the hole finishing it off.   To finish off the unicorn I stamped the horn from the Pink Fresh set onto a scrap of 100# white cardstock using Tsukineko Encore Metallic ink in purple and embossed with Judikins Irridescent Sparkle embossing powder.  After die cutting it I attached it to the center of the forehead of the unicorn with liquid glue.  I used the ear die from the set and cut it from both white and pink cardstock pieces.  I attached the outer white part of the ears to either side of the horn and then attached the inner pink part of the ears inside.  Using the unicorn stamp and die set I stamped 1 large and 2 small flowers on scraps of different colored cardstock  I die cut them and shaped them a bit and attached them across the forehead of the unicorn along with some stamped and die cut leaves from the set.  I put a silvery embellishment from my stash on each flower.

For my banner sentiments I printed out the saying that I thought of on white cardstock in two separate sections.  Then I used Sue Wilson’s Pierced Flags die to cut each one out and attached to the front and inside using foam tape.  The other inside sentiment was stamped from the unicorn set and die cut with the Fiji dies from Sue Wilson.  The inside was stamped on white cardstock and the edging was die cut from Bazzill purple Bling cardstock.  Lastly I scattered some Pretty Pink Posh purple jewels on the outside and inside.
